Book Review: Test-Drive Your Dream Job

By Brian Kurth (with Robin Simons), founder of VocationVacations.

What Is This About

The front cover implies this is a "step-by-step guide to finding and creating the work you love". How true this is! Written by the person who actually created and founded VocationVacations - a place that helps you test drive your dream job - Brian Kurth is living proof of its authenticity and reality.

Written in a breezy, easy style to read, this path comes to life with sound planning and true stories. Mr. Kurth (with Robin Simons) writes from his heart - and shares his fears, trials and tribulations, and path to success with us. It truly is a blueprint for planning to work in a career you love.

Basics Of The Book

Divided into eight chapters, Mr. Kurth does not shy away from sharing his fear of failure, and how to overcome yours. He helps you map out a plan that works for you. Yes, you've heard it before, but not like this. Breaking down your plan into simple, easy, manageable steps is not just a fad with him, it is a way of dealing with all challenges and potential obstacles. He is a realist; he knows the plan may not always go the way you want it to - and so a chapter is devoted to "When Things Don't Go According To Plan". And no, he does not advocate just "doing it" either. A major change requires careful and indepth research, action goals, and a viable plan, as well as that proverbial test drive.

Two major chapters concern how to do your test drive, and of course how to plan and implement your plan. He does not challenge you to go it alone, but rather to pick out your support in the form of "cheerleaders" and "mentors". Yes, another chapter is devoted to finding a mentor - and this is an important (and intimidating for most people) part in your test drive!

The Test Drive

It sounds simple - but you must do the work ahead of time. Take your vacation and actually work in a similar job to your dream job. Immerse yourself in it. And no, it is NOT that simple. You need to truly do a proper assessment of self and job - and yes, Mr. Kurth guides you through this as well.

Recommendations

Whether you are considering a change of Career or just want to know what another career might be like, or even how to change ANYTHING in your life - this book is an excellent guide, and is highly recommended for anyone who even just wants to get further ahead in any chosen path!
