People who want to make sure that their career continues moving forward need to be sure to focus on constant self-improvement.

For those who have a well-defined career path (or even for those who don’t), it is vital to continuously work on those things that propel that career forward. Being aware of what is going on in the industry or a profession, staying in touch with those in the know, and volunteering to take on even the less desirable projects are all ways to send the right message to a boss.

For employees who are looking to ensure their career continues to grow, here are seven steps to help keep it moving in the right direction.

Continuously Learn Something New

Nothing can sink a career quicker than for employees to rest on their laurels and believe that everything they have done in the past will continue to give their career a boost. In fact, those who don’t stay ahead of the curve by keeping their skills current are likely to be seen as outdated. That is why it is important to continuously learn new skills – technical and otherwise.

Whether this means going back to school to obtain an undergraduate or graduate degree or just to take a class that will broaden an employee’s understanding of the world at large, always look to learn something knew.

It can be a new software package, a foreign language, written communication skills, a business topic or anything that will add dimension to the individual who is learning.

Study Business, Industry and Profession

For those who like to read, make sure the topics are broadly focused. Career seekers should study all kinds of business trends, their industry as well as related industries, and their profession.

That means health care workers might expand their horizon to investigate other aspects of the field such as the administrative angle or acute care instead of pediatric care and accountants might want to look into other business disciplines such as sales and marketing or even human resources.

Keep in Touch with Business Contacts

Yes, it’s that old dictum: network, network, network. But it’s more than just networking. It’s about having an active network.

That means going again and again to professional meetings, chamber mixers, trade shows and conferences, any place where it is possible to meet and greet with people who offer friendship, support and knowledge. And then it means finding a reason to stay in touch.

Be a Visible Part of the Team

When it comes to the work at hand, job seekers need to focus their attention on making sure to create the type of reputation at their current place of business that indicates they are a capable and promotable team mate. And that just may mean being a team or project leader.

Standing out from the crowd by demonstrating leadership qualities along with a willingness to help and support the team will go a long way in helping job seekers to promote their career aspirations.

Offer Suggestions and Ideas to Help the Company Grow

Want to really make a good impression with the boss? Offer creative solutions, money-saving suggestions and ideas that communicate a better way of doing things. Companies are meant to operate at a profit and so any time they can find ways to operate more efficiently and for less money, it not only is a big win for them, it is a big win for those who proffer the ideas.

Find a Great Mentor

Finding a mentor is always a wise career move. This is the person who can offer employees guidance, answer career and business questions, provide tips on company culture, and act as a major support when it comes to career growth and development.

Let Superiors Know Career Plans

Finally, this step cannot be overlooked. For employees looking to climb that ladder of career growth and success, it is imperative that they notify the people who can provide them with the proper training and development as well as opportunities for promotion. There is no way a supervisor can help an employee move up the career ladder if the supervisor isn’t aware of the employee’s intentions.

Growing a career is a matter of taking the time to focus on the right things to keep a career moving in the right direction.
