Upgrade Your Skills For Better Job Choices

Being unemployed is not the end of your career. It's an opportunity to see what else is out there, and to upgrade or learn new skills to help your job search.

In these economic tight times, losing your job can be the norm, not the exception. And your country does NOT want you out of work – the economy depends on people spending. So take advantage of your "off time" and the many opportunities open to you.

Second Career Strategy

Actually, this is a program from the Ontario government specifically for those who are laid off from their jobs. It's a chance to learn a new career. Even better, it pays for your tuition as well as living expenses – up to $28,000. You'll need to talk to a counsellor about your work history, and your interests. Other provinces have similar programs. Check your local employment office for programs that are available for you, to help in your job search and to open up new careers for you.

General Upgrade of Skills

Don't have a high school diploma? Newcomer to the province or state? Your local government has created programs to help you get those needed skills. For high school, the credit classes are often offered at night or online, to accommodate parents and those who are working. You can also upgrade your reading and math skills through the Literacy and Basic Skills program. These are also often offered through your local library. English as a Second Language classes are also offered locally. Upgrading your skills will open many new doors for you.

For newcomers, there is a Bridge program designed for you to utilize your existing skills and credentials to your new country.

Take Time For Yourself

Being unemployed gives you a chance to reassess your life. It's an opportunity, not a slap on the wrist. Are you where you want to be? If not, how can you get there? Is there something you'd rather be doing in the workforce?

If you have years of experience, it might be time to consider consulting, or starting your own small business. Don't think in terms of grandness, but in a simple business plan where you provide a service or goods. Again, your local government has many ways to help you – from Starting Your Own Business classes to actually helping you develop a plan of action.

You may also want to check out some other educational opportunities for changing your job.

Bottom Line

Finding another job is not easy, but your attitude and perseverance will help create opportunities. You are not alone – there are many programs that will help.
