Take the time now to assess your Career Life. If you're not where you want to be, consider the option of Career Coaching or Mentoring.
Yes, the end of one year is almost here. It's time to start reflecting on what has been done this past year, and plans for what to do for the next year. You might want to consider some options available to you through Coaching and Mentoring.
Career Coaching - what is it? Simply put, it's the positive influence one consenting member has in helping another consenting member of an organization. The idea here is to help mold a rising star in the business world into a successful....leader, executive, CEO, next boss, manager, whatever. One on one is usually referred to as Mentoring (one executive helps a younger employee learn the ropes etc.); when an organization helps you, it's often called Coaching.
Sounds easy, but it isn't. You, as the learner, must be willing to accept certain responsibilities, such as actually learning from mistakes, looking ahead to future possibilities, and applying what you've learned to your day-to-day work environment, if not your life.
You, as the Mentor or Coach, must also be willing to accept certain responsibilities. You must be willing to give up some time. You'll need to focus the drive of your potential person by asking questions, thinking of scenarios for the person to solve, and being able to accept a solution you didn't think of.
Coaching and Mentoring is one site to check out for basic information on Coaching and Mentoring. Not only does CCM provide for organization set up and advice, there is a lot of free information to get you started on your own.
New Training Ideas provides some excellent resources via online training as well as videos. And of course, for in house training as well.
CoachThee is a great place to start for those thinking of being coached, be it by self (online/DVD’s) or with a personal touch (live person). This site helps you get a better idea of what you might be looking for to help you get ahead.
Thinking of becoming a Coach? Try out Coach Training Alliance – it’s a great site for opportunities and how to tell what you are in for should you decide to take this route. Training of course is provided for a fee, but the orientation is free – as long as you sign up as a “Friend” (again, registration is free, and you only need to provide your email and name).
So get a head start on the new year by trying out some coaching or mentoring techniques.
